English coins have evolved over the years. In the early 1600's, coins were made by the hammer struck system. Hammered coins or cast coins were the primary way coins were made and thus limited the number of coins that could be placed into circulation. Hammered coins were made as far back as the 1st millennium BC and continued in use until the 1500 to the 1700's. English coins underwent a change in approximately 1663.

Hammered English coins were made using a blank quantity of metal that was the desired weight placed between two die. A die is a mold or template that allows the metal to be cut to a certain size and shape. The metal die contained an image that when hammered directly would mold the image on both sides of the coin. The unit was sometimes placed on a log or other secure surface which was known as a pile. One person held the die while a second person struck it.

There were many issues with this type of coin minting. For one thing, it was extremely slow work. Comparatively, few coins could be made and placed into circulation. A 2nd problem was that hammered coins had many irregularities. When several coins were placed together in a container and shaken about they got damaged as well . That is why older English coins might have chips and coarse edges.

Silver coins also show evidence of clipping. Silver was a valuable metal in those times and folk who were less than honest would took small slivers of the early English silver coins. The coins have been clipped.

In the 17th century hammered coins were replaced with milled coins. While France was the first country to start manufacturing coins that were made completely by machine, England wasn't far behind. England, in fact, began to manufacture coins on a trial foundation in the mid 1500s, but it wasn't till the end of 1662 that English coins were made completely by machine.

The screw press was the first machine to produce coins as an alternative to hammered coins. Leonardo da Vinci was the person who invented the screw press in the 15th century. It was powered by a water mill. Early on efforts were made to diminish the affairs of the clip artist by edging. You will see that manufactured English coins have milled edges.

Milled English coins were much more uniform in size and shape as well . The rate at which milled coins might be created allowed the coin circulation to grow and a larger number of coin denominations to be developed.

English coins were used in this nation during the colonial period. Hammered coins were created and used up through the end of the 18th century and were scattered throughout the colonies. English coins went through several changes as can be seen in old coins that have been made in the U.S. Over time.

Coin collecting is a major hobby for young and old alike. As soon as you get started it's difficult not to become dependent on riffling through a pile of coins every opportunity you get. Picking up rare US coins is a great project to get your child started on. I'm going to give you an inventory of rare US coins you'll need to start looking for.

The first of the rare US coins to put on your list to find is the 1943 copper penny. It's a treasure if you can find one and could be worth quite a bit. The rationale why the copper penny is so rare is actually because in 1943, WWII was going forward and copper was being rationed. The majority of the pennies being made were made from an amalgamate of brass and steel, not copper. You can work out whether your 1943 penny is copper by trying to pick it up with a magnet. A brass penny will stick to the magnet.

Next, you will want to keep an eye out for anything made in 1870. If was made in San Francisco that is even better. The most highly cherished among collectors of rare US coins are the 1870-S half-dime, the 1870-S silver greenback and the 1870-S gold $3 coin. The S stands for San Francisco.

Liberty Head nickels made in 1913 are also among the sought after rare US coins. Five were made in 1913 and later held by one man. This man commenced talking about these rare coins and their value began to skyrocket even as he held them without any one knowing. The last time they were sold, one sold for almost 3 million dollars.

Among the latest rare US coins is the 1974 aluminum penny. Copper prices began to rise steeply in the early 70s and the cost of producing the penny cost just about a penny. The US Mint commenced to look for alternatives and created an aluminum penny. They sent some out some as samples and they were never returned.

Another of the rare US coins is the 1982 No P dim. All cents minted in Philadelphia were imprinted with a P beginning in 1980. However, a mistake happened in 1982 and the P was accidentally left off a small number of coins.

If you are into collecting cents, start attempting to find the 1955 Double Die Penny. Among rare US coins being picked up it has an estimated value of between $200 and $1000. When these pennies were manufactured, the coin got out of alignment and the imprint was doubled. The image and lettering are double and it is extraordinarily easy to see.

These are only a few of the rare US coins that you and your youngster might want to begin looking for. Most are easy to identify and fun to look for. If you find one of these rare US coins, be sure and read up on them and have it seen by a pro. If you catch the collecting bug, you may wish to look into the best ways to keep and protect any rare coins that you find.

If you have stumbled across a rare coin, you may be wondering what it is worth. Maybe you have been picking up coins for a long time or simply picked up the hobby in the last few months. Either way, you will benefit from finding a reliable source to figure out rare coin values. There are many online sources now for finding rare coin values that are easy to get and use.

To determine rare coin values it's wise to take a look at several sources and compare one to the other. You may also go to a place where similar coins are being sold and see what the particular value is on the open market place. You'll find rare coins being sold on Ebay and other online auctions.

You may find rare coin values just about any place you'll find the history of a coin and information about it. You can find a Price Guide for newbies on the Heritage Auction studios website. You can search for your coin by denomination or common coins and read about topics relevant to coin collectors.

Heritage Auctions also holds regular auctions if you are interested in buying or selling coins. Watching these bids is another way to determine rare coin values. All the small print of the coins being offered for sale are supplied.

If you are a professional collector and would like to step it up a bit, you could enjoy visiting the PCGS Price Guide on the professional Coin Grading website. This website provides detailed rare coin values that is of relevance to a significant collector.

The Guide to U.S. Coin Values is another fantastic resource for coin collectors wanting to learn about rare coin values. This source lists wholesale values or the price a dealer will pay you for the coin.

Another option for deciding your rare coin values is to take them to a private dealer for analysis. It is important to do your homework when looking for a local coin dealer. Don't take your coins to a pawn shop, jeweler or anyone that does not know rare coin values.

The Professional Numismatists Guild ( PNG ) Directory is one place to begin your hunt for a trustworthy rare coin dealer. This organization has stringent requirements of all dealers who are members. You want to make certain you are working with a credible person and have options if a problem arises. Rare coin values are most accurately decided by someone with a great amount of knowledge and experience.

If you can't find an area dealer in the PNG Dealers Directory you can try looking in the Yank Numismatic Associations ( ANA ) Dealer index. They operate by a standard of ethics and can serve as an intermediary if you run into an issue. You may be more likely to get a local dealer through this index although some consider the PNG Dealers to be a better group. Either one should be able to help you locate a local dealer than can help you establish rare coin values.
